The first of the "Passport to
the World" series was held October 15, 2006 at the newly restored
Cannon Valley Winery in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. Over $10,000 was
raised from ticket sales and silent auction bidding which
went directly to ten children's charities in ten
countries: Angels of the Amazon (Peru), Yele Haiti
(Haiti), War Kids Relief (Iraq), Afghani Model School
(Afghanistan), Half the Sky (China), Educate Girls Globally
(India), Life of Hope (Guatemala), Orphan Sponsorship International
(Russia), Nyumbani Children's Home (Kenya), and PeaceHouse
Foundation (Tanzania).

Silent auction tables were
filled with cultural artifacts and indigenous items like textiles,
rugs, pottery, handicrafts...

...as well as culturally-themed
experiences like Middle-Eastern belly dancing lessons, Chinese feng
shui sessions, Afghani horsebackriding lessons, a trip for two to
the Amazon jungle...

...and one-of-a-kind
custom designed items like theTanzanian Zanzibar Beach Bag, the
Guatemalan Coffee Bean Carrier, or the
Haitian-inspired 'Lucky Voodoo Doll' representing each
country, along with easel boards providing interesting photographs
and facts about each country and charity.

An international hors d'oeuvres
buffet featured delicious ethnic foods such as Iraqi goat
cheese-stuffed dates, Indian gulab jamum, Haitian plantain chips,
Afghani baklava, Chinese eggrolls, Guatemalan tamales, Russian
herring...

The evening's entertainment was highlighted
by a fashion runway show where fashion designer Dina Fesler
presented ensembles inspired by each region on models from
around the world.

TESTIMONIALS:
"To the editor of the Cannon
Falls Beacon,
I'm writing to convey our gratitude to your wonderful community, and
to two remarkable Cannon Falls residents in particular. We are a
small beneficiary charity of the "Passport to the World" events held
at the Cannon River Winery, organized by Dina Fesler and Connie
Bickman. We were deeply touched by the interest and generosity of
Cannon Falls residents, from all those who voluntarily organized the
event, to those who attended the event and generously donated to the
various charities represented.
But we are especially grateful to Dina Fesler and Connie Bickman for
utilizing their remarkable talents for the sake of needy children
around the world. Their impressive "Passport to the World" events
are top-rate artistic and organizational achievements, and it's
simply awe-inspiring that the renowned talents of these two
remarkable individuals is utilized to such magnanimous ends. Besides
bringing the world a little closer to Cannon Falls with their unique
"Passport to the World" events, I can testify first hand that Ms.
Fesler and Ms. Bickman successfully bring Cannon Falls to the world,
with so many children around the globe having benefited from their
efforts.
On
behalf of our organization and all the children we serve, I express
my deepest gratitude to Ms. Fesler and Ms. Bickman, and to the
Cannon Falls community as well. "
Sincerely, Nick M. Hindman

"Wow! Tremendous! Awesome! The
"Passport to the World" event was this and more. I can't begin to
imagine the hours you spent on this event. You have such a
talent for fashion design--the outfits were lovely with very
apparent reflection of the culture they were associated with. The
silent auction gift baskets, the displays, the food choices, the
place, the passports, and on and on really reflected your
talent and love for what you do. It was beautiful, charming,
creative, engaging--obviously a labor of love. Thank you! Thank you!
Thank you! Rest and know that you did a beautiful
thing." -Barbara G.
"For years I traveled
vicariously through others, enjoying the shared adventures and color
of trips experienced. Last Sunday, two very gifted women
shared their experiences and passion through a well-planned
and uniquely entertaining fundraiser event called "Passport to the
World." The fundraiser will assist well established
ministries/charities serving and assisting children throughout the
world. Those in attendance "visited " ten different cultures at
displays featuring regional foods, products, facts and photographs
from each country found on our "passports. " Though they gave credit
to many volunteers that made it happen, I would like to thank Dina
Fesler and Connie Bickman for a most delightful evening. It was
wonderful! -Avonne B.
